Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of a TMJ disorder. TMJ headaches are generally tension headaches, but they frequently escalate into migraine headaches. The tension occurs from constant clenching of the jaw, or from nighttime grinding (bruxing) of the teeth. The pressure alone can create the headache, but pressure also results in constricting blood flow in the head and neck. When this happens, the body will direct more blood to the area, which can result in an increase in localized blood pressure. This can create vascular headaches.
